as of r34077, possibly earlier, on WinXP Pro, symptoms persist, except that
explorer does not actually crash. Instead, the following pops up:

The system cannot find the file specified.
Context: ShellPath::ShellPath(LPCWSTR)
Object: C:\abc
Location: base/shell/explorer/utility/shellclasses.h:674

Symptoms are identical in ROS.
