I do this all the time, it works.  What doesn't work is trying to select any
32bpp  resolution from the first stage setup IN QEMU.  The Cirrus Logic card
emulated by qemu only does 24bpp, not 32bpp.  So if you select any 32bpp res,
you get the fallback 640x480x8bpp.  You can select the 32bpp depths in vmware,
or with any card that actually supports 32bpp.   I'm not going to argue the
finer points of 32 vs. 24 bpp.
