I confess I also had the timezone set to -5 when it is normally set to -8
(default). this I think makes some difference.  there is another bug to this
effect elsewhere that listed different effects.  I think timezone may still
have some problems in 0.3.6 that prevents proper shutdown.

on shutdown you should see a blue screen with some sort of sleep quote and "you
can switch off your computer now" message.
