Softice relies uses too many undocumented knowledge: exact location in memory of many important kernel data structures and internal representation of these structures. If you look in pice source code you'll see that I had to do some similar tricks. This was done not because of bad programming style - there is no other way. 

In addition Softice uses debug information in pdb format and gcc generates stubs or dwarf (?).
