it *has* been introduced. It's called UDI, and it's an universal API + ABI 
for device drivers. It was very promising, backed by big hardware makers 
and definitely *not* wishful vaporware (it came with a reference 
implementation and some real drivers), one of the best things ever come out 
of Caldera/SCO/whatever, but they have decided that they'd make better 
profits with lawsuits than products, so bye bye UDI. Let's hope someone in 
SCO smartens up and decides to pull UDI away from the sinking ship (like 
they did with OpenDOS), because it doesn't deserve it
