Really? Doesn't 64-bit systems also use register size (or multiples thereof
where required) for each argument put on the stack? Meaning that even an
8-bit argument on a 64-bit arch. would use 64 bits of stack space - just as
an 8-bit argument uses 32 bits of stack space on a 32-bit arch.

Is there something obvious I'm missing?
