Since using a named pipe doesn't seem to work properly, there is an alternative option to get debugging data. Using vmware, you can easily change the configuration to output the serial port to a text file. Attempting to use COM1 on Windows 2003 as a regular user is a no-no. So adding another boot option in freeloader to debug to the serial would be a good idea for the mean time.

  I think that the description of bug #288 isn't correct. The little test
  program does never fail. It seems that is not possible to terminate a
  thread, which does currently wait on a waitable object. The pipe test hangs,
  because the sever thread has called ReadFile and waits within npfs. A little
  patch solve this problem.
