You might want to consider Casper Hornstrups script to set up a good
building environment. It's the last link on this page:

It also saves the trouble of setting up symbolic links etc. It might be
needed to compile flex yourself and add it to your path though, at least
the debian unstable version of flex was broken atm i installed it.
