I think using "$(CC)" instead of hard-coded "cl" could be even better
(thinking ahead, in case someone would want to try e.g. the Intel compiler).

So long as there are no VC7(.1) specific flags used, that's true.

There are some new flags added to link.exe after 6.0, but if none of them
(or other VC7+ specifics) are used, then I agree with:
