WEB-RAPPS suggestion

Postby jonaspm » Sun Mar 18, 2012 8:32 am

Do you like the idea of creating some space in the ReactOS website for RAPPS so software devs can add their projects automatically to rapps, and show them as a "market"?

That would help ReactOS add more apps to Rapps easier and everyone could share their software...
of course they would need to accept rapps´s terms of use and software may pass some "virus test" or something like that...

what do you say?

something like Android Market (Google Play) but without being a real "market"

No.

It should be for easily finding existing apps that are *compatible* with ReactOS. If we open this up to everyone and anyone, it'll be filled with junk, not to mention the possibility of malicious software.

I think Rapps currently serves it's purpose well: to show compatible apps to the user and make installation easier.

Of course the devs apps cant be published if they are not approved by ReactOS rapps managers....

This should attract devs to develop in ReactOS

The website should be created first, someone has to maintain it, not to mention checking the apps. It takes a lot of manpower to maintain.

With many people surfing the net everyday?

There should be someone thay would like to do that job... Maybe two or three...

Why not invite people here to join the RAPPS team?

That doesnt sound better?

I'm more concerned about the bandwidth issue. Hosting isn't as expensive as it was, but it's also hard to raise funding for projects like ROS. Besides, any dev-made software that's specifically for ROS will be a part of ROS already.

We have little to no need for developers to develop "for" ReactOS. Anyone developing for Windows is already developing for ROS, in theory. What we need are developers to develop ROS itself, and this suggestion does not help advance that cause.

RAPPS already does that.

ROS devs aren't making their own software, AFAIK. If they are, they already have an appropriate website for it. And it can be linked in RAPPS.

At the moment the main purpose for RAPPS is so people can download a browser or file sharing client so they can get whatever other software they need. A new install can not directly access it if you put it on the web.

The other purpose right now is so devs/testers can skip the above step of installing a browser to get to certain software for testing. It will be a long time until average computer users can start using ReactOS.

I would like to see RAPPS somehow linked with the compatibility database perhaps showing a star rating next to it to display how well an application works with the current version of ROS,plus someway for users to easily feed information back into the database from their desktop. To allow easier testing and at a glance idea of what is expected to run.

Only a pie in the sky wish though as I know that if I want this I ought to sit down and start coding :)

I plan on doing one myself, but it probably won't be for another 6-12 months. Also, it probably wouldn't be included by default with ReactOS (I only program with php).

This would be phenomenal for ROS! Too bad I'm a lazy coder and use AutoIt for all my coding. I've forgotten nearly all the C/C++ I ever knew. :(

I'm a c/c++ coder but I've always used libraries like wxWidgets to create GUIs, I never learnt the basic WIN32 way.

Sounds interesting. So after installing a browser the user can visit this site to download more software? or is the PHP compiled to run on ReactOS?

PHP is not compiled. It's interpreted by the PHP-Interpeter on a Webserver (e.g. Apache). So one would need a running webserver on ROS or a webserver in the internet is needed which would be the default page for the default browser of ReactOS. Which is the default browser in ReactOS, again?
