Fund Raising

Postby dava4444 » Sun May 06, 2012 3:35 am

Hi Guys, (first post so be gentle, ..but I have some thoughts on fund raising.)

Warning, This might Be TL:DR, as a kind of blog article/post, just saying.

I am a fan of ReactOS, I have watched for many years the progress of the Dev Team, with eager wishes and keen thoughts, as we approach 4.0 pre-Beta (5.0 is the traditional Beta AFAIK)
I note the front page asking for help, this kind of money does not come easily, and I hope there are donations, but for what is ambitioned, I feel small donations cannot suffice. a backer is needed and so to the ..'Thought'

In the Open Source community, money is NOT a dirty word, ..in fact, Red Hat and Canonical are quite rich. They sell support and training to companies who use that training for their IT professionals, it is the way Linux makes money, even governments employ such companies, to train IT for their server farms . An initiative to investigate this for React, i feel, to at least find out if the money/numbers would work, has the potential to bring money in. Talk to MS's enemies, ..IBM really doesn't like MS, Apple really doesn't like MS, Sony really doesn't like MS, Google really doesn't like MS and so on..

(I actually don't mind MS, i think they're a good company, but would I like to see React be successful? YOU BETCHA!
like Canonical and Apple, opposites but kinda the same, Ubuntu Open, OSX Closed*. React Open, Win Closed)

but this would mean a Server version of React, which would be a hard sell, not because the OS would be bad, but because not many IT heads buy MS server support, so why buy React's?
but here's the smart part (IMO) don't aim for huge companies with vast server networks, aim for office and business groups, that's my suggestion. By the time we hit the big 5.0, I hope (if this whole idea is acceptable) we could make a medium* server farm for demonstration purposes, and if we could land a Training Contract with a small subsidiary from the list above, i feel it would be the first step in a long but fruitful journey to the React Dev Team making money and becoming a 'company'.

TBH, right now, ReactOS 'feels' pre-Beta, so if the team decide to go straight to Beta, ..it's been a looong time coming :D :D

What do you guys think? good idea, bad idea? okay idea but needs tweaking?

please share your thoughts.

Thanks

Dava

also if my facts are wrong, please feel free to pm me, and i will investigate and correct them.

*I know there is no compatibility between Linux and Darwin, Ubuntu and OSX, and there is between Windows and ReactOS. but it just 'feels' right to say this as concept of opposites.
*enough to serve one office block.

I think most of the ReactOS folks are well aware of the benefits of obtaining corporate backing in one form or another.

Do you know (or know anyone who would know) of any one who might potentially be interested in investing in ReactOS in any way?

Sorry, I don't :-(

I'm actually a musician, who system builds and did some consumer rights blogging, for a hobby.

The enemies idea was my best shot, if the most personable, person from the Team could talk to the aforementioned enemies IT/RnD departments, just by phoning up and making inquiries of their relationship to Windows and MS (on the down low, off the record, kind of thing) and find out what they would be looking for from a Windows-style based server, and then trying to meet their needs.

prolly all stuff said and thought about already, but i tried :-)
