Why not starting with the wiki? There your login would be "permission" enough to edit and to even to translate content in your language. It is also part of the website and maybe even more important.

Puh, never done that. Try to start with the first page of the Wiki and edit the very last lines of the Translation box with all those languages. Compare what is written and change it to the following
! colspan=7 style="background-color: #003399" |
so from colspan 6 to 7; ok during writing that - Dutch was added, but if you don`t change, you can try " show preview" and then fix it. then you will see why we`re changing it.
...
|-
|colspan=2|[[Traduction Française]]||[[Deutsche Übersetzung]]||[[Traducción Española]]||[[Nederlandse Vertaling]]||[[メインページ|日本語版]]||[Your language]]
|}
...

Next you can click your language and edit create your language main page. and so on red links are not yet filled/translated and blue links have content.

It is not difficult as it is very similar to html (which isn`t difficult) - compare, copy, trial`n`error.

Maybe someone can add a link where editing a Wiki is explained.

Good luck

You should also take a look at "More information on editing wiki pages".

I have the question about translating the wiki. Are there any guidelines about that. I saw Russian translation use the "New Main Page", the others (I suppose older) translations use the old one. Which one should I use as a template?
