How far is ext2 support in ReactOS?

Post by Black_Fox »

http://www.reactos.org/wiki/File_Systems wrote:The settings to format a HDD partition to ext2 are already included in the 1st stage setup, but are currently disabled. The ext2 file system driver itself is developed enough that it could be used. (...) As of r44038, it is possible to boot ReactOS on an ext2 partition through building of the arty-newcc branch. Yerkes also added a _NEWCC_ switch (in r44092), which would allow merging to a trunk build and building with either the new or old cache manager implementation.
Is there an existing build already circulating the forums with merged NewCC and enabled ext2 support?

There is ext2 in the recent source code but I'm not sure if it's ready yet. Haven't built it yet.

[EXT2LIB]

Fix formatting FAT or NTFS volumes into EXT2 by defining ZAP_BOOTBLOCK and fixing a bug in zap_sector() [USETUP]
Enable ext2 as an option in setup
Formatting and building file copy list works but setup stalls shortly after starting to copy files (NewCC on)

Then it'll be epic for me then. Since I've never experienced ext file systems on anything other then Unix systems. >.>

Considering this is ext2 we're talking about, you're not missing much.

There have been IFS EXT2 drivers for NT family for a while, and some are quite good. The main limitation is that you can't boot from EXT2, but I haven't checked the subj for some time.

I guess it is more psychological and good for PR. :D
It is also nice to have a choice (in the install menu one day  ) and EXT2 is more advanced than FAT.

EXT2 maybe not much, but EXT3 and EXT4 for sure ^^
ReactOS is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is recommended only for evaluation and testing purposes.

About the only thing ext3 has over fat is the support of journaling. Otherwise it's just ext2. And ext2 is not really more advanced than fat, it's just limited in different ways.

Journalism is a nice feature :)
Ext2 vs FAT is well...more or less the same. Ext2 has Transparent compression(optional iirc) and FAT doesn't, dunno if Ext2 for Windows has it too.
Ext3 could be an interesting FS as we don't have NTFS replacement... :(

ext3 wouldn't really put us much closer to getting the features we need to reach parity with NTFS.

Yup, nothing is comparable to NTFS but at least an EXT3 with Journalism..helps a little.I meant that :)
