Everybody hates Tango
Do you like the current Tango icon set, which is used in ReactOS? Many people has already expressed their dislike to it pretty much. Me? Honestly, I dislike it with undescribable hatred. I know it came from Wine, so the developers are still keeping that icon set "for easy code syncing", but honestly one day it must be replaced by more vivid, colorful and lively theme.
I did some research and came across "popular" icon set called Crystal. It was commonly used in KDE and Gnome over the years, and had several revisions.
The older one (which I like the most, especially its folder icons) is here:
http://www.customize.org/gicons/33109
(Optional) "Kids" subset is here:
http://www.customize.org/gicons/33360
The newest one is here:
http://www.everaldo.com/crystal/crystal_project.tar.gz
http://www.everaldo.com/crystal/crystal ... 56x256.zip
http://www.everaldo.com/crystal/crystal_project_OOO.zip
I'd be very happy if the people would support my idea, because interface is the first thing that users sees and interacts with.
P.S. Sorry for lack of comparsion pictures and illustrations. Feel free to make your own and post them here.

I too hate Tango, but everyone has their personal tastes. I think the best thing to do, from the perspective of a new user who is just trying the OS, is to use images similar to (but not identical to) those found in Windows.

FlyingIsFun1217, the funniest thing is that Crystal is more XP-alike than Tango, especially concerning overall colours. Tango looks way too "lifeless".

Re: Everybody hates Tango
For me, the crystal theme has always come off as too child-like. I was thinking something more in nature like this, with a close look to (but again, not identical to) icons found in '03 or XP.dsp2003 wrote:FlyingIsFun1217, the funniest thing is that Crystal is more XP-alike than Tango, especially concerning overall colours. But we each have our own opinions, I'm positive not everyone feels this way.

Re: Everybody hates Tango
I don't hate, nor support Tango, but I have something against the proposed Crystal set. It's too... I don't know, a mix of abundent/tiresome(/something else). Maybe it's because the garish colors, maybe it's too much detail in each icon, I'm not really sure because I can't accurately identify the uncouth part. As for "lifeless", although I agree, in my opinion an icon set should be descriptive before anything else. It should help me get the message easier (like roadsigns), not to entertain me, and definitely not to force me to decode it like a chinese glyph.
Rather than propose something externally, why wouldn't we make a call for ReactOS artists/designers to come up with options here.

I don't know if I would say I *hate* tango, but I'll admit it's pretty ugly. I dont think we should copy windows, however. ReactOS needs a strong brand of its own, although the developers haven't pursued one so far. Like the sticky thread says about look&feel, the deveopers don't really have time to mess with it yet. Instead, I think we should be focusing on branding and promoting. Of course, I'm not one of the devs and I have no say in this. It's just my oppinion

Concise and direct

An image comes to mind of a cave man hacking away at a piece of stone trying to make the first wheel, while everyone around him is discussing what color it should be.

But I like Tango. It clashes very well with the Windows look, surprisingly.
Stay frosty, Tony Bark.

Re: Everybody hates Tango
tango with a glossy effect remains overdone, i agree.
however there are linux icons i love, here on my XP pro laptop i use gPerfection, converted pngs to .ico's and here they are :
http://nowhereincoming.free.fr/bbs/wins ... ection.rar
alos had some fun ripping some vintage 32x32 win95 icons
http://nowhereincoming.free.fr/bbs/winstuff/95.rar
now if you still think these are too mainstream, but want something kinda vintage done in a delicious raw isometric pixelART i have this Silicon Graphics's irix iconset for you.
http://nowhereincoming.free.fr/bbs/winstuff/sgi.rar
now i gotta think about designing my own icons.
