Alternative icon theme - GNOME

Post by WorldBlender »

I have heard from some posts about replacing the current icon theme (Tango) with something more modern (the most-suggested here is the Faenza one). Although I personally like the Tango style, :idea: I think that there is another icon set that is similar in the Tango style, but more modern-looking at the same time (by featuring photo-realistic effects), [may slightly update the default look and feel of ReactOS], and that icon set is the GNOME icon theme (stable releases >= 2.29.0). This icon theme should have some more icons packed in than what Tango packs, and besides providing the usual sizes of 16x16, 22x22 (add 2 more pixels to make 24x24), 32x32, and 48x48, it also has the high resolution 256x256 size, just like the icons that ship with Windows versions Vista and later (not every icon has highres versions yet). By default, only PNG files ship with this icon theme. However, by downloading the source distribution, SVG files of the icons in most, if not all sizes, can be edited to create more icons. I have made just a few of the icons into ICO files so far, but if any of you accept my proposal, then I may make the rest of the icons and upload them.

Icon theme license: GNU LGPL version 3+ or Creative Commons BY-SA 3.0, for versions >= 2.29.0 .
Older versions are licensed as GNU GPL version 2.

Unofficial gallery (contains icons that do not come with the standard GNOME icon theme): https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/825 ... gnome.html
Another icon theme with a similar style (Cheser): https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/825 ... heser.html

Source distribution files: http://ftp.acc.umu.se/pub/GNOME/sources ... con-theme/
FTP version:ftp://ftp.acc.umu.se/pub/GNOME/sources/ ... con-theme/
Tip: some of the icons from version 2.29.0 up to the latest version have changed, so multiple versions may have to be downloaded to get as many icons as possible, for example, up to version 3.8.0, the folder color was manilla-colored, but on that version, the folders have become beige-colored.
Update - Official set of extra icons for GNOME: http://ftp.acc.umu.se/pub/GNOME/sources ... me-extras/
FTP version: ftp://ftp.acc.umu.se/pub/GNOME/sources/ ... me-extras/

Example SVG file (an old metaphor for edit-delete, which could also be used as draw-eraser):
PNG rendering (from a git version of the icon theme, licensed as GNU GPL version 2):https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwRl-u ... sp=sharing
Actual SVG file (no preview): https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwRl-u ... sp=sharing

Then switch GNOME footprint into ReactOS atom one.
-uses Ubuntu+GNOME 3 GNU/Linux
-likes Free (as in freedom) and Open Source Detergents
-favors open source of Windows 10 under GPL2

Nice icons indeed.
ReactOS is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is recommended only for evaluation and testing purposes.

If my post/reply offends or insults you, be sure that you know what sarcasm is...

I will see. I'm working on Faenza Icons ATM. Maybe I can take some of the Gnome icons if there are no matching icons available.

I am now working on porting most of the GNOME icons as ICO files. They will ship with only 32-bit images, so if they do not display properly, some work may be needed. When I finish this task, I will post the icons online for all of you to look through and decide where to use them. They will be licensed as any one the licenses used by the upstream icon theme, depending on which versions I take the icons from.

Here it is! I have now completed a subset of this icon theme. This collection may now be obtained at:
:arrow: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwRl-u ... sp=sharing
This icon collection, as stated in the file "COPYING", is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International license, so it should be usable with the ReactOS project. (To the ReactOS developers): Feel free to use as many or as few icons as needed, though replacing the current Tango icon theme may satisfy me more.

Other important stuff (the contents of the "README" file):
This is a port of a subset of the GNOME icon theme to the MS-Windows .ico format. All sizes, except 22x22, are provided in all icons. Some icons have been slightly modifed from the originals, mostly for trivial changes. Source SVG files are provided for these changes. No icons with trademarks, except for 'camera-web' (a version of this icon without the GNOME logo is included), 'media-optical-dvd', and 'media-optical-bd' are included in this packages Be aware that they only contain 32-bit color depth, so may not display correctly if these icons are used in systems without 32-bit color implementation. This collection is intended for use with the ReactOS project, but may be freely used anywhere else, even for commercial purposes. These icons are taken from the following packages and are current as of the versions indicated:
* gnome-icon-theme 3.12.0
* gnome-icon-theme-extras 3.12.0

Later on, I may port the rest of the GNOME icon theme into the .ico format, and I can create more on demand easily if any of you would like since the source SVG files are publicly accessible.

Which begs the question...

Has there any decision been made as to what icons/templates we will use? It would be fun to have a new set for the RCE.

In fact, maybe we should hold a contest and a vote on it?

In fact, I dare not suggest such a thing for fear of having vic chastising me again because he already wants to do something similar. :P
