(Solved) Get Desktop and Mouse but thats it.

Post by Rolz »

Hello all,

I've booted 0.4.9 up in vmware exi 6.0.0 (3029758) and all I get is the desktop and the mouse moving.

Ctrl-alt-del does nothing, so I'm a bit lost as to what to do next

I did search before posting, but nothing really jumped out.

Cheers :)

Did you use the Boot CD or the Live CD?
How did you configure the VM prior to installing?

Did you look here? https://reactos.org/wiki/VMware

FWIW, I've never had great luck with ROS in ESX...

yeah nothing in there, it's almost as if "explorer.exe" or whatever similar ReactOS process isn't starting.

Also you might want to try using an SATA or IDE controller, the buslogic one is flakey even with real windows even thought it's a brain dead simple device.

Alright, so I re-created your VM situation and discovered a few things.

First, you set up the VM as a Windows 2000 guest. It should be Windows XP Pro (32 bit), especially in VMware because of the virtual hardware.
Second, you've added two vCPUs for some reason. ROS is only single-core capable currently.

I'm testing using ESX 6.5:
  • If I setup VM as Windows 2000, I have issues controlling the mouse but managed to install. After a reboot, I see the same thing this post is about - desktop and mouse, but nothing else.
  • If I setup VM as Windows Server 2003 (which is what I use in VirtualBox), then the installer can't find the hard disk to install. This is an issue with the disk controller driver.
  • If I setup the VM as Windows XP Pro (32 bit), then the installer works normally. I'm able to reboot and return to the desktop. I was even able to install the VMware Tools and it worked great.

I've tried the WinXP Pro and have also had the same success!
Thank you for your help!
I'm now really looking forward to testing ReactOS out! :)
