Current (2007-02-18) SVN trunk broken?

Postby Raygun » Tue Feb 20, 2007 1:01 pm

Hi, everyone! Hoping that in some small way I could do something for ReactOS (i dunno, some utils development, etc.), I have downloaded and compiled (with RosBE, on WinXP) the SVN trunk - no hurdles here (bootcd, livecd).

Have tried installing in Vmware both from the iso image and a physical CD (burnt from this image) - the installation starts, then the screen goes black and that's it.

Have tried burning the livecd image and booting from it - got BSOD with this (not sure if the data is of any help to anyone, but here goes ) -

Is there something wrong with the current SVN trunk? Or, maybe I'm doing something incorrectly

Well.. I sure will try it, although I fail to see what Vmware has to do with LiveCD going BSOD (NOT on Vmware, mind you)

Trunk is currently broken specifically on VMWare. It works on qemu. Probably has something to do with some of Alex's HAL modifications.

Thank you for your reply! 8)
I will surely try QEMU (although I still fail to see the connection between VMWare woes and booting PC from a LiveCD)

I have tried Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 - to no avail. QEMU 0.9, however, allowed me to install current SVN trunk (I have updated and recompiled my copy). But after the installation, I was unable to boot my QEMU virtual machine  This was also the case with the SVN snapshot of the 0.3.0-REL which I have downloaded and compiled.

The only way I could run ROS compiled locally was to boot QEMU machine from a LiveCD. Oh, well.. At least I can make changes, compile and see what happens :?

Downloaded images (for VMWare and QEMU) work fine, on the other hand.

P.S. I can't say I'm Windows guru or something, but I have done some C (WinAPI), C++ (MFC, wxWidgets) and some MASM coding too. But not kernel-level deep magic stuff. Although I haven't got much free time on my hands (alas), maybe there are some tasks I could help with? Any ideas?

What is "unable", what error did you get? The trunk should work on QEMU, though explorer now takes much time to startup.

There is no magic in the kernel, it is like any other program.

You can talk with developers on IRC about it.

It didn't even start to boot, showing "Disk boot error" or something along these lines. The same problem was with the downloaded and compiled svn-0.3.0-REL.zip

Sure, but you have to understand the basic principles, plus debugging is a big PITA (AFAIK)

Well.. What's the best time to be there then?

P.S. I wounder if it would be more practical to use email, or some sort of private forum messages.

I know about "partition signature != 55AA" error. Just repeat installation to the same disk.

Debugging is not difficult when kernel runs under emulator.

You can use "ros-dev" mailing list.
