Feedback for Live-CD v0.2.9

Post by u101 »

I tried the Live-CD v0.2.9 on 3 PCs:

- A P4 2.4GHz with Hyperthreading (Hangs with text screen telling it found a processor)
- A Duron 900MHz; Board: MSI MS-6378; Chipset: VIA KLE133 Chipset, VIA VT82C686A / 686B Chipset (hangs without displaying anything. except one short flash of a (blue) text screen. Displays error message if you eject the CD)
- A PIII 550MHz; Board: AOpen MX6B EZ; Chipset: Intel 440BX

It only runs on the PIII 550MHz but it is hard to give any feedback (bugreports) as there are no errormessages displayed on the problematic PCs. Thus booting could be a bit more verbose if you want feedback.

A LiveCD with more preinstalled software would be nice.
I would like to see
- Firefox
- OpenOffice
- Windows GTK runtime
(http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html)

Sure Firefox and OO are nice apps to have s.th. to play with. The wish for the Windows GTK runtime may seem a bit strange, but it is hard to install this on a running LiveCD (no ramdisk or Overlay-FS). Any I would like to see if some windows-gtk-programs work. (Writing GTK programs is my favourite way of writing portable applications, and it would be nice to see that they run under ReactOS, too.)

I have the same problems like other people here on this forum.

I have tryed the Live CD Version, the Install CD version and also the booting of the Iso Images with ISOEMU.

The results are all the same.

On a big part of the PC's the Live CD Version of Reactos fail to start becouse it freeze/hangs on the boot Process by loading the needed Drivers.

From my side of View at the Moment Reactos is only making for running under Emulation Mode like Qemu or VMWare.
Running Reactos on Real Hardware fail allways becouse the Hardware Implementation is not such good as it should.

Hello !

As first thank you very much for your helpfull Answers.

I would like to ask you what exactly for a hardware setup does you have.

I belive one possibility why on some PC's reactos works and on other pc it doesn't work could be that we have differnet hardware setup's.

I itself has for example on the following PC two harddisk conected to the
two IDE Controllers.

The First harddisk (hda) has 3 Partition
The second one (hdc) has 7 different Partition with four different File Systems.

If i try to install Reactos or run the Live CD version on the Following PC
Reactos allways freez at the booting process.
The last Line in the booting process is the following
"Loading drive.sys"

Here are some detailed hardware Information.
It could be great to know how much Hardisks and how much partition with different file system do you have.

Maybe you can give me also a link to a good dos or linux hardware analyse tool.

I itself has used the very good and helpfull dr hardware sys info tool
for the MSDOS Envirenment.

http://www.drhardware.de/english/pghpdrhd.htm

Thanks in advance for more Infos.

Thanks for the log

I see the problem why LiveCD does not work for u
VESA Compatibilty : Vesa-Bios 1.32, VESA VBE 1.0 (Status: active)

We do not support VESA 1.0 with ReactOS VBE driver only VBE (VESA) 2.0 or higher. That explain alot.

If i understand you right GL then the problem why the Live CD Version of
Reactos immediatly freeze after two seconds is that it don't have
the right VGA Driver included in the Live CD.
If i understand you right also this needed VGA driver is for some Reason
included in the Install Version of the Reactos CD and that's why i have
the possibility to boot and load drivers in the Install Version of
reactos but not in the Live CD version.

If this is true.
Exist a reason why this driver is not included in the Live CD.
If this reason don't exist is there some plans to inlcude this VGA-Driver in the near Future in the Live CD Version.

Thanks till yet for the Help.

Hi
It have been talk about how it should be done. and we are aware some machine can not run LiveCD. For it does not work with VBE 1.x. But some work was inprogress to add VBE 1.x to the VBE drv. But I lost my VBE 1.x card. and therefor no work in progress. for adding VBE 1.x to VBE drv and therefor you need VGA drv or a 3d parti driver.

Hello GL !

I was just on the ebay web site to look if i can find a Graphic Card which support VBE1.x

If you have interesst and time to develop the VBE1.x support
i can try to buy such a very old Card for you.
With such a card you should no more have problems to develop the VBE1.x driver.

If i am not wrong such old cards can be buyed for only 1 Euro. Thats about 1.5 dollar.
The shipment of the Card to Sweeden could more Cost then the Card.

Here is a Link from the needed Ebay Section.

Reactos does not start if there is only a slave IDE device (and no master) on the 2nd channel. In that case it hangs at the boot picture and the floppy led lights up forever.
