Cairo Shell
About ReactOS shell there is a free shell for it, the Cairoshell is in Alfa state bad it would be prefect for Reactos. From pictures looks very promise the CairoShell project. Here is the webpage of it: http://www.cairoshell.com/
If you can but this shell from reactos and keep also the full compatibility with other Windows programs it would be nice..
This shell can be an Option for reactos shell..

Cairo is slated for Vista, not Win2000.

The Win2k goal has been surpassed a long time ago, although current compatability, as it is in alpha stage, is probably more at the win2k stageReactOS Newsletter wrote:Target Platform
The Windows version that ReactOS officially targets has been a point of confusion for some time now. There are actually two specified targets, one involving the NT kernel and the other for the Win32 subsystem. Officially the ReactOS kernel still targets the Server 2003 kernel, also known as NT 5.2. This target changes fairly slowly. On the other hand the Win32 subsystem target is always at the latest Windows version released, which would be Windows Vista as of the writing. This is why there are often commits stating updates or implementations that are Vista based. When Windows 7 is released the Win32 target will shift again, but this does not mean a decision will be made to shift the kernel target as well.
Re: Cairo Shell
People have suggested this before, with such GUIs as GeoShell and KDE.Main Page wrote:The main goal of the ReactOS project is to provide an operating system which is binary compatible with Windows. This will allow your Windows applications and drivers to run as they would on your Windows system. Additionally, the look and feel of the Windows operating system is used, such that people accustomed to the familiar user interface of Windows® would find using ReactOS straightforward. The ultimate goal of ReactOS is to allow you to remove Windows® and install ReactOS without the end user noticing the change.

Re: Cairo Shell
Hey!
Did the devs put up a New Shell needed board anytime?
Thats cos they are happy with the standard shell which ROS uses atm (err.. happy as in .. with it being there .. i dnt mean bug free "yet" )
Any other shell will be user choice to install .. If it works now great .. otherwise wait for it to work/ Send us some nice patches (we love patches)..

Re: Cairo Shell
Cairo's closed source software, which probably isn't the best way to present an open-source operating system. Plus, that lack of openness with the code would probably make developing with it more difficult than it has to be, as ReactOS is still in alpha and might not be fully compatible with Cairo. Lastly, the devs seem to be pretty dead-set against anything than the Windows Classic look to cut down on processing power and not deviate too far from Windows in appearance.
There's already a new ReactOS Explorer ready. It runs on Windows, but it isn't being used in ReactOS yet because ReactOS can't currently run it. The new Explorer should be up and running by about 0.4.0.

You mean Explorer New or Cairo?vicmarcal wrote:It will run in 0.4.0
Re: Cairo Shell
Explorer-new
One of the sures objectives to launch 0.4 is having explorer-new as the default explorer.
Of course the word "sure" has to be taken not as 100, but as a real high probability.

Re: Cairo Shell
Plus, Cairo doesn't seem to be GPL'ed.
Nor open-source which, in my world, means it is pure evil. The bastards!

Re: Cairo Shell
Not only is it not open source, but even if it was, it's written in C# I believe, so it could not be natively included on the base distro.

Re: Cairo Shell
Well, incase anyone is still watching, Cairo shell has just gone open source: http://www.cairoshell.com/blog/2010/01/ ... en-source/
You may have noticed that the development team has been quiet over the past few months since the release of M1.9. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to dedicate as much time as we have hoped with our developers becoming more and more involved with their actual jobs. Of course, none of us want to see Cairo cease development. So, we thought we’d do something about it that allows us to continue on with our extremely busy lives.
The answer, of course, is going open source. Starting today, you can log into GitHub and make changes to our git repository. Naturally, we ask that you be professional and not damage the code. Go nuts with your skills to help us make Cairo the best it can be!
There are several notes we must make regarding edits:
* The Cairo team has locally branched code. We will only release these branches.
* Code committed to our git repository should not change or break any of Cairo’s user interface guidelines. We have worked hard in order to carefully craft our user interface.
* Committed code should be tested to make sure it doesn’t cause instability.
* Changes that are malicious or extraneous will not be tolerated.
* Code which meets our guidelines and quality expectations will be merged into our local, official code branches.
We look forward to seeing what the community can come up with and thank you all for your continued support.

Re: Cairo Shell
Nice news. Thx for sharing
ReactOS is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is recommended only for evaluation and testing purposes.

The new website doesn't mention anything about Cairo being open-source. Any links to an updated source?aussie_boi wrote:New Website - http://cairoshell.github.com/
