32-bit proper OS/2 subsystem

Postby v_2samg » Fri Mar 12, 2010 12:40 pm

Can we expect a complete 32-bit implementation of an OS/2 subsystem in ReactOS? We can use the OSFree project as a base and build from there. This would allow ReactOS to be embraced by longtime OS/2 users and also expand the software compatibility scope.

I don't think you can expect it. Not in even in a slightly distant future. But you can always start a subproject, gather developers and make it happen.

While the OS/2 subsystem is a component of Windows NT, the fact is that most programs don't use it. There are tons of other components that are more important, such as USB support and Win32, so I'm doubtful that anyone will tackle the OS/2 subsystem anytime soon.

That being said, if anyone did want to do as you said and use OSFree to build an OS/2 subsystem for ReactOS, they're more than welcome to.

Hey, v_2samg, I was poking around the ReactOS wiki and found this information on planning for the OS/2 subsystem. Looks like someone thinks like you do.

Hmmm... Thanks for the info. Agreed, it is not so critical at the moment. But it sure is a nice feature, if implemented. Maybe in the near future... :)

And probably use DOSBox to implement NTVDM. Just a thought...

If the OS/2 aficionados start a subproject to implement it - then yes. Makes more sense to do that instead of making a whole OS from scratch, but what do i know... Has anybody contacted the osfree team about it yet?

Two links:

NuDawn
a project that will integrate an OS/2 emulation within WINE using the OS2LINUX library. Thereby permitting OS/2 applications to be executed on Linux. Versions of WINE and OS2LINUX specific to this project willl be kept on this repository.

OS2 API emulation for NT
an OS/2 emulation layer for NT. It emulates over 110 DOSCALL functions. It consists of a library that is linked into your OS/2 program.

Hope that inspires !
