hello i'm a newbie here i want to help on this project i'm a windows user but i'm tired of paying for price software but really
want to use linux can someone help me to get started thanks

Sorry, ReactOS is not a Linux Distro but a full new OS

If you want to use Linux, you may try Ubuntu. I use it by myself too. It has a huge community, a very big software repo and an intuitive user interface (unity, a li'l bit like OSX Interface, but you can use the classic gnome too).

Not for newbies, Linux Mint fixes whatever Ubuntu broke.

Ubuntu is more of a Power user Distro that's not sophisticated enough to use the more advanced distros.

But It's targeted towards new users, but It's buggy and I think I know why. They target the majority with largely un-patched packages based on Debian SID that makes it less stable because they can get an army of guinea pigs to send in bug reports. If they just used Debian Stable and made it easy to use, we wouldn't make progress as fast.

So MS haters should use Linux Mint.

Mint is just an Ubuntu clone, nothing else. Lately tested both and guess what? Same bugs everywhere.

They are both ok if you settle for a basic PC usage (and very few Windows games work via Wine) and you are directly wired to the Internet. But if you are wireless dependant, oh well...

I am confident ReactOS will outrun both in the not so distant future.

Mint is based on Ubuntu, so how can they fix anything? And how can Ubuntu break anything? Ubuntu works nice for me (10.04). I tried Mint once. Mint Debian Editon. It was nearly as horrible as debian itself .

Ubuntu is like Debian with more up to date packages. But, It's more unstable.

With Debian it's more tested and they pick certain versions of of packages and patch it and make it more stable.

Debian is hard to set up, but once you set it up, it's rock solid.

Well... I had every Linux crash, that I installed. Ubuntu crashs, debian crashs. No difference. Debian is rock-solid with its packages. You will never get up-to-date packages if you have "stable". NEVER. With Ubuntu you have up-to-date packages, when you install it, when it's new. And then there are third-party-sources, which bring to you UP-To-Date packages.

I like Puppy Linux. It's very light, full of tons of software and it flies on most pcs.

Yes, Puppy Linux is my main distro (I deleted 7 from my computer to put puppy on it). It's fast, but not really supported. It also goes WAY fast. It's really brings out the inner beauty of the Linux Kernal.

I recommended puppy Linux, Screw Ubuntu (Slow unstable crap...). It's easy to use, free, small, fast, and fits onto a USB drive. 126MB .iso!

Debian >4.x is pretty easy to set up, just select if you want to install GUI or not, and you`re done

I managed to get rid of Windows for a good while .

Got on Ubuntu for a few years . Great distro, but when they switched to unity interface, it was a total mess

I wanted to make my "computer" like more interesting, and switched to arch linux . This one was really interestin, i got to say : It takes a while to get it up and running, but it's worth it

I will try reactOS ( i read about it long time ago, but didn't had a chance to further research it )
