pcmcia.sys is the worst nightmare ever!!

Postby Alahndro » Wed Mar 14, 2012 11:44 pm

I just can't get my wirelass pcmcia card to work in xp.

When i try to boot with it inserted it plain freezes -no bsod -no hints. And even if i'm lucky to get it working when started, i still have to use a patch filter (Echo ENE cardbus filter) to get it to run clean, otherwise it will not connect or gets resetted a hundred times trying to aquire an ip address and the system won't even regocnise it being pulled out and crashing violantly...

the funny part is that win7 will somehow work with it but you can see that it too has to try several times to get it initialized, and the patch is needed too... But i prefer xp over win7, cause everything runs smother etc etc...

Back to XP: i tried all settings - freeze
i tried safemode - freeze
I applied disablepcitoisarouting - freeze
it tried some older filter patch from fujitsu, but it seems not to function anymore as it was written for pre-sp3.
i even tried to change the starting order of the kernel driver pcmcia.sys, filter and wlandriver - once it didn't freeze on the known position but i got a bsod about ntfs.sys the next second.

I even pulled out the cdrom and changed it, and it worked for 3 reboots until it freezed again.

I also tried to find a way to disable busmastering of the ide driver, but the bios is locked completely and the old registry tricks to order windows to disable it don't work (anymore?!).

I also thought about trying older versions of the driver but haven't find a way yet to disable the windows file protection to replace the file in system32/driver. Or maybe i'll have to write a custom installation routine to get it inserted after i renamed it.

Until today i already encountered 3 laptops with problematic/buggy pcmcia controllers/drivers. I can only hope that you guys can do it better.

So: Would it be a wise idea to try reactos' pcmcia driver???

I can confirm that there is a pcmcia.sys in ReactOS.

Have you considered that the adapter itself might be bad? Have you tried it in Ubuntu, for example?

I've tested it on another Laptop, it works fine!! And under Win7 too.

Also i once used an usb adapter w/ problems, but this was pre-sp3

You can look it up on google, you'll find numerous reports: "ENE 1420 Cardbus Controller"
Or just search for cardbus + freeze.

Have you tried getting the most recent driver from the vendor?

Solved it!

But I needed to dismantle it to find out that i searched for the wrong modell, and therefor didn't find the latest bios...

It works now!

Please note that PCMCIA/PC-CARD is not supported yet because of the following reasons:
- Pcmcia.inf is still missing.
- Pcmcia.sys exists, but it is only a stub. Even if it was loaded, it will just sit there and do noting, no matter which card you insert into a slot.
