The little square is familliar to me. This is the "Not defined" character. Has
somebody been playing with ANSI->Unicode translation?

If so, what language is this being done under? It could be that the regional
settings are calling for glyphs that simply arent in the font set, and isnt a
regression at all. :P

(Then again, it could mean that ROS is asking for invalid unicode characters)
