"showing an arbitrary font" seems enough to trigger the problem:

- run "mstsc" (remote desktop)
- desktop context menu (right click)
* menu entries show with increased height, submenu arrows (almost) vanished
* the menu is still usable though
- close "mstsc"
- start "desktop properties" (desk.cpl)
- desktop context menu (right click)
* menu entries are back to normal

Remote Desktop & desktop icons

Notice that the text and icons in "Remote Desktop" are shown incorrectly. Press
"Alt" key and the upper halves of the icons will disappear. Switch to "Display"
tab, then back, now spacing is correct.
