Yes, I too think it's a compiler bug that cause the warning flood.
A compiler should accept an explicit cast, as given by the programmer.
(And programmers should be mindful of explicit casts of course.)

Who will decide whether to apply the patch, or discard it?
I think this ought to be marked as resolved,
but I am not in a position to make the decision.
