As I noted previously, I wasn't breaking the rules. The wiki states
under feature freeze:
"Any nontrivial or destabilizing modifications to the branch must be
discussed on the mailing list prior to committing."
I think restarting the release process is a little extreme. Lets just
forget this thread ever started ;)
