[ros-kernel] Debugging ROS with GDB

Hi,
sorry for asking this, but the past threads about debugging were not 
enough information to get this working...

Today I had a little closer look to GDB. I read about how to use it and 
so on. Now I was thinking to try to debug ROS with it. I'm afraid I 
don't know how to debug a program which does not run on an OS but is the 
OS itself... (simply typing gdb progname won't do it there I think)

So how is it possible to debug the ROS kernel with GDB? Can I tell 
freeldr to first run GDB and then ROS somehow?
