This is not supposed to be done there. The reading of resolution
is done by Win32k and the 640x480x8 is only a default that should
be used in case that nothing is specified in the registry (or the
specified mode fails). I don't remeber in which key are the
values stored, but you can look at bootdata/hivesys.inf in the
section for VMware video driver.
