they would probably open-source only the components that Microsoft owns and can legally make open-source, and would release a free version of Windows
Which components could be (list)?

Re: Elite Dangerous/Star Citizen

But the true question is,... ...can ReactOS run Duke Nukem Forever ? If it works under Windows XP, you can try running it under ReactOS, with "Mesa 3D" installed. Just make an .iso with the game and Mesa 3D to mount it under VirtualBox, QEMU in ROS. Do you have any link to download this game demo?

Re: What would happen to the ReactOS project if Microsoft decided to make Windows open source, and will it ever happen?

That's the whole point. NOT all core components are THEIRS to "open source", and they cannot cleanly separate them without having to re-develop parts. I just gave an example, but the issue is general. It has to do with the problem that licenses can be given for specific usage manners... but not for...

Re: What would happen to the ReactOS project if Microsoft decided to make Windows open source, and will it ever happen?

The problem, and why their legal department killed the idea: Windows contains a lot of third-party-code which has been licensed by the respective companies to Microsoft, and which MS does NOT OWN. And hence, a release of this code would give rise to claims AGAINST MS by said third parties. - There ...

testing games you want to look for games that are 32bit and use DirectX 9 and you may need to use user created patches Gamers are needed for intensive game testing! :D I can remember in my time: "Kkrieger-beta", "INCOMING lux et robur", "INCOMING FORCES", "WillRock", "HALF LIFE 2", "Serious Sam" I,...

Re: TheRegister: "ReactOS ‘a ripoff of the Windows Research Kernel’ claims Microsoft kernel engineer"

Yeah, but in a negative way. It would most likely give the project a bad public reputation though, because if people suspected that ReactOS is using pirated code from Windows then there will be a lot of criticism and legal issues to come. Everyone would just lose faith and call the project dishones...

This may be because of your keyboard - it's more than JUST a keyboard. There are LEDs and other features that might be affecting it's ability to work at this early stage of setup.
What other features have modern USB keyboards that are so differents than PS/2 keyboards?

Re: Boot from USB Drive?

According to some reports on another thread on the General Discussion page apparently in the Nightly's build you can apparently now boot from USB if the post is true. I've tried the recent Nightly's on a USB drive and it doesn't yet boot from the USB and after the loading sequence it just goes to a...

Re: ReactOS 0.4.12 issue found

Hey I've been following ReactOS for a while and have tried to use it with virtual machines and so far this one is the most stable version I've used. Now I am seeing if ReactOS is compatible with programs a Company I'm with has made, and found an issue with the OS, The system doesn't update disk spa...

Re: Aspects of Vista/7/8/10 that should NOT be ported to React

W10 is not an OS. I will repeat that, W10 is not an OS. W10 is a graphic terminal to your MS cloud account. With W10, MS is no longer pretending it thinks you own your own computer. The whole trusted installer thing could be explained from a security stand point, except that core components expect ...

RosBE portable

I see that ReactOS Build Environment is in installer format only but, what about portable format to just use it without installing it?

I also see that the following post is years old: https://www.reactos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=14753

Bueno de momento, las versiones actuales como la 1.8.8 aún funcionan en ReactOS. Veremos cual será la primera versión que ya no funcione más... y ver si la capa de compatibilidad logra su cometido.

Well finally it happened: https://jira.reactos.org/secure/attachment/54465/VirtualBox_ReactOSTelegramMessage1..png I hope that compatibility layer will be enough to run newer versions... Telegram is a golden app. I will see when new version will be available to test... For the moment last version (1...

Not yet. Only Ram boot will work.
What is still missing in order to have full USB 2.x working in ROS?

Re: New USB stack was finally enabled in nightly builds of ReactOS!

Will this allow us to write the .iso from the nightly builds onto a usb stick for installation? I think yes. Writting ROS iso onto USB using Rufus under Windows and booting it successfully with USB devices connected .... and (when all problems will be fixed), writing ReactOS iso under ReactOS using...
