So, for all practical purposes, it's indistinguishable from nonexistent.

Re: I finally figured out how to make Win7 not suck; might be ready to say goodbye to XP
You are actually kidding. I use Windows 7 on my personal computer, I have clear separation between accounts from day one, with my main user account with minimal user rights, and the built-in Administrator account enabled. The built-in Admin account is the equivalent of the "root" account ...

Re: I finally figured out how to make Win7 not suck; might be ready to say goodbye to XP
Or, why don't you just give Administrator rights to your account (or just use the built-in Administrator account directly)? Because administrators aren't allowed to do anything in NT 6.x I'm not kidding. Administrators in NT 6.x have fewer permissions that ordinary users do in NT 5.x I'm actually s...

I finally figured out how to make Win7 not suck; might be ready to say goodbye to XP
Today, I learned the last pieces of information that I needed to learn in order to make Vistaspawn (Vista/7/8/10) usable and tolerable. With this, I might finally be ready to say goodbye to Windows XP, or at least never use it outside of virtual machines. First, the cosmetic stuff: 1) Install Classi...

"Expect" does NOT imply that you are giving orders! I can say "I expect Windows 12 to suck even worse than Windows 10" but that doesn't mean that I want Microsoft to make it happen.

And you're still wrong because that's not what a monopoly is.

Re: Aspects of Vista/7/8/10 (and sometimes 5.2) that should NOT be ported to React
Found another one: I just found an old, 16-color bitmap (!) that was used as one of the original Windows 3.1 wallpapers, and set it as my wallpaper in Windows 7. I immediately noticed that the wallpaper showed subtle JPEG compression noise that was absent from the original file. Digging on the Inter...

Re: Programs that heavily rely on NT 6.x APIs list
Good luck finding a Win7 compatibility mode when using XP. That would be proof that Microsoft is secretly in possession of a time machine.karlexceed wrote: ↑Wed May 29, 2019 4:16 pmDoesn't Windows do this with their Compatibility Mode functionality?

Switching the target to the NT 6.x kernel might save R&D time in the long run
Yeah, yeah, it's been discussed before, blah blah mission creep, blah blah we don't want to suffer the same fate as Duke Nukem Forever. But hear me out. An hour or two ago, I was looking for information on "One-Core-API" (a touchy subject around here, as I understand it), and stumbled upon...

Re: Programs that heavily rely on NT 6.x APIs list
Plus, from a normal end-user perspective, if software says it needs Vista and runs without complaint using a Vista shim, then that's just a technicality. As I already pointed out, that's a huge "if". Can a shim be made that deliberately mis-reports the Windows version number when programs...

Re: In the event a trade regulator takes Windows away from Microsoft
By definition, monopoly is not only for company, monopoly mean : "The domination state on a market or a the whole control on everything in a domain." Yes I know I used a pleonasm (for "whole" and "everything"). Wrong. A monopoly is when there is only one seller/vendor ...

XP's taskbar was resizable vertically by hand, ie. you could drag the top of the taskbar and shrink it in size so it was a mere sliver or expand it back up again. This was quite a useful function when you had the taskbar placed at the top of the screen (strangely, normal for some) and you found one...

Re: Programs that heavily rely on NT 6.x APIs list
I mean... The easiest way is to look for: "System requirements: Windows Vista or newer." You'd think so, but a lot of these restrictions are arbitrary and artificial. I know from experience that World of Warcraft could be run on Windows XP for quite a while after XP support was officially...

Bootloader and multi-boot question
My desktop runs a triple-boot configuration with Linux Min 19, Windows 8.1, and Windows XP x64 Edition. Whenever I nuke the hard drive and reinstall everything, I must do so in a specific order because of how the bootloaders behave. GRUB (the Linux bootloader) can see Windows installations, but Wind...
