Re: Appreciation to Developers

Here is the current interface: the upgrade/repair screen is shown only if the ReactOS installer detects the presence of a valid installation. Thanks for that! It's about time for me to upgrade to the latest nightly (do that every couple weeks) so I'll see how it works. I'm using ROS for browsing a ...

Re: Appreciation to Developers

Be advised, it isn't a very sophisticated update/upgrade process and it is not unlikely that it will bork the system in one way or another. Thanks! I did try it again and it appears the interface ('U' option when asked if you want to install ROS) is completely gone now. No loss as I couldn't get it...

B - it is already there a long.
Thanks! Tried it a couple months back, thought it failed but maybe that was 'user error.' Very busy now but I'll try again in a few days.

Appreciation to Developers

A year ago I spent a few weeks trying off and on to get ROS working just to browse the web, read news sites, MAYBE EVEN make comments. Most of it was there, once I tried this D610 instead of a Dell 4600 (or something from that generation -- I don't recall exactly) but it was too fragile to be usable...

Re: secure-delete on ReactOS

Eraser57 is probably still out there; it doesn't work under ROS -- gets an access violation. It's still alive after you clear the messages and doesn't seem to have done any damage to ROS but does not work. I've used it many times under XP -- it's flexible, does the job. Separate-but-relevant questio...

Re: How to back up a few files?

Okay, much better solution. The FEBE idea only works for Firefox environment stuff and turned out to be so fussy about dates and such that most such files wouldn't restore anyway. PLUS the major pain of straightening out the DOS short file names. A much better way to move a few files off of ROS (in ...

Re: ReactOS on my notebook!(USB storage worked)

This is encouraging: If one person has gotten USB storage to work it must be very close. Can you tell us the make/model of PC, the specific ROS build, and anything special you did to get it going? On my Dell D610 the Dec. 16th nightly build doesn't do anything with USB -- doesn't see the thumbdrive ...

Re: ReactOS on Patreon?

I sure think this ought to be considered. ROS is beyond pure gleam in the eye and bits of code: It's usable just as it is for a very narrow kind of job -- browsing the web without any output other than to the screen. One or more full time developers to add support for the rest of the basic devices a...

Re: Update Manager and compatibility?

"Alpha means, it's the first step of development, it's very far away for a daily usage." I'm probably about the only non-developer who can use it daily: I read web sites a couple hours a day, don't want to look at video or play sound, don't do things involving sensitive data -- I have another comput...

Re: How to back up a few files?

Solved it! Had an 8gb USB thumb drive made with RUFUS (bootable) with assorted tools including XCOPY. Boot from that, the ROS C: disk is at D: and via the usual DOS commands I got to my copies of the Mozilla appdata files thinking to copy them into the ample extra space on the thumb drive. I got 're...

Oh h... yes, it works!

ROS nightly build from Dec. 16th is up and running native, Dell Latitude D610, 2 gb ram, 2.13 gh processor. Boots and installs from the boot CD, no problems, the file system -- which was so shaky that I gave it up last year -- is now pretty robust. I've had a couple of dozen Firefox failures -- most...

How to back up a few files?

Well, after I took a year off from trying to use ROS to browse websites & other general home applications I come back, and Ta-DA! It WORKS. On recent nightly builds the file system is solid enough (no need to re-install in maybe 10 hours of use, always passes boot up testing even when shut down via ...

Re: ReactOS 0.4.12 released

This is the new release on a Dell Lattitud D610. The progress since I last tried ROS about a year ago is stunning. The feel then was 'fragile' ... you are walking a narrow path strewn with rocks, steep dropoffs in many places and sinkholes are frequent. In this year of work it's been leveled and pav...

Re: Best web browser for ROS is Mypal?

Mypal + has a modern rendering engine and can display all sites without errors that I have tried - does not play youtube videos despite officially supporting video extensions Firefox 48 + can play youtube videos (choppy) - has some rendering bugs, example is the yt page itself, getting worse as FF4...
