Re: Two decades later...what's the point?
It's 10000 times nicer than it was in 2000. But ppl now are lazy.. They want everything to be feed to them. They want to ask "siri, i don't care about privacy, in fact, use my porn info to get more oriented porn adds". They want to do 1 click to have food at the door. They want to have fr...

Re: Two decades later...what's the point?
The world has changed. In the old times (2000) the fight was against MS closed standards and intentional standard change. Back in that day ppl would not use OpenOffice because the files would be different when opened with MS office. Linux had 0 windows applications and 0 Windows games. Wine failed ...

Re: Possibilities For NTVDM and other Sub-Systems
Speaking of ENIW, not to burst your bubbles erkinalp, but would it be easier instead to include UNIX-like/POSIX subsystems that already exists for Windows, such as Cygwin or MSYS2 (both are licensed under GPL-compatible licenses)? Also, I know that WSL 2 uses virtualization via Hyper-V. I don't know...

Proposal for a package management system for ReactOS
I know that ReactOS kinda technically has an 'Applications Manager' where you can install both free and proprietary 'freeware' software, although I wouldn't call it a 'true' package manager since it still just downloads the installer that would then install the actual software. And it also only inst...

Re: Boot Screen
You can try installing Resource Hacker (it's in the App Manager), extract the boot screen in ntoskrnl.exe and edit it with a raster graphics editor like Paint.NET or GIMP, making sure that the colors are in indexed mode, and then replace the new modified bootscreen and then replace the kernel.

Re: My Opinion Regarding ReactOS Donations and Funding
I'm not against the ReactOS websites to have advertisements on their page if it would fund the project. I know that Linux Mint has ads on their project page. I think if people are optionally going to view the ads, what's the point of them anyways? The advertiser can just pay the project beforehand, ...

Re: Original Microsoft OpenSource Windows parts
b@theuserbl That all seems pretty interesting. I've heard they plan to port Edge to Linux in a Reddit post, but it's not officially confirmed that would be the case and so it remains proprietary. But the possibility of using MSIX can get UWP compatibility more easily. Alot of other things Microsoft ...

The Windows 3.x file manager is open-sourced, too: https://github.com/Microsoft/winfile
Interesting list.
Interesting list.

What is the philosophy of ReactOS?
I want to know what is the philosophy for ReactOS in terms of its design, its targeted users, the packaging of applications, the inclusion of non-free/proprietary applications, its final release process/model and release channel/branches, and its out-of-the-box experience and included pre-installed ...

Are you trying to boot from USB, because I did that recently with my 2007 HP Pavilion with a live key of version 0.4.12 and it hanged at the startup screen.

Re: What would happen to the ReactOS project if Microsoft decided to make Windows open source, and will it ever happen?
they would probably open-source only the components that Microsoft owns and can legally make open-source, and would release a free version of Windows Which components could be (list)? Pretty much anything Microsoft made themselves or has the rights to. I'm not sure about specific components but erk...

Re: What would happen to the ReactOS project if Microsoft decided to make Windows open source, and will it ever happen?
Yeah, some of the components that Microsoft bundles in do come from third-party sources, a lot of times through their "embrace, extend, extinguish" strategy, like Microsoft Defender. But there's a lot of Linux distributions that come packaged with proprietary elements, such as Ubuntu. Agai...

Or use Cygwin/X or MSYS2, (or a WSL distro like Ubuntu for Windows) and run an X server and graphical application on WIndows.shunesburg wrote: ↑Thu Oct 17, 2019 1:43 pm For that you use an Wayland Linux Distribution and install Wine on it.

Re: Would Microsoft replace NT Kernel with Linux kernel?
I follow ReactOS, Haiku and I honestly believe they are better than linux. of course, they have a lot of missing parts, they don't have even a 0.01% of workforce linux has, so they are incomparable with it by the readiness criterion. but unlike linux, they are based on something better, than linux ...
