Re: Release testing for 0.3.16

It really can't be stressed enough that ReactOS is currently in alpha stage and is not ready for every day use. One of the limitations is that it's not very good at handling partitions or dual/multi booting, which is what many people who try to install ReactOS on real hardware do in order to test th...

Re: Release testing for 0.3.16

Ah, I didn't see that announcement. Apparently 0.3.16 was released within the last few hours with no forum announcement.

Re: Release testing for 0.3.16

And..also on the english page it's not all updated, it still reads: "ReactOS 0.3.15 is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is recommended only for evaluation and testing purposes." instead of 0.3.16. That's because 0.3.16 hasn't been released yet. The results of t...

Re: Thorium (ROS distribution) on kickstarter

I've been testing ReactOS/Arwinss for years, and game compatibility is nowhere close to where it needs to be. Maybe it would be if they had $120,000 to work on it, but it's a Catch-22: I can't bet the farm without some assurance that ReactOS will reach the level it needs to be at, and ReactOS won't ...

Re: Thorium (ROS distribution) on kickstarter

I'll tell you what I want Thorium Core to do. My website uses jDosbox to make DOS games playable in a Java applet in your browser. DOSBox is capable of running a copy of Windows 3.1 and even Windows 98, but it wouldn't be legal for me to put a copy of Windows in a disk image on my website, which any...

Re: My experience with ntvdm

I would go to C:\Dos-progs\tombraid and type "..\ntvdm setup.exe". I suspect that dos4g.exe isn't found because it's not in the folder that you're invoking NTVDM from. Or NTVDM might not be capable of dealing with an executable that calls another executable, but try my suggestion and see w...

Re: My experience with ntvdm

The bottom screenshot is what you get when you run the NTVDM that comes with ReactOS trunk. Are you sure you were using the new NTVDM for that one?

Re: Copyrights, patents and ROS

Well, it was more of an invitation to maybe explain and/or discuss the thoughts about these issues and that basic strategy in regard to ROS/patents. It's possible that they don't want to reveal what their strategy is to the patent trolls who might be reading this forum. As far as I understand from ...

Re: Copyrights, patents and ROS

Basically, software patents are the bane of the industry. New Zealand banned software patents, and hopefully other countries will follow suit. The problem with software patents is that you can patent a concept so broad and so critical that every piece of software on Earth violates it. How do you pro...

Re: Release testing for 0.3.16

Patent law is a whole other matter, and even farther off-topic. Let's save that conversation for a more appropriate thread.

Re: Release testing for 0.3.16

I could've accepted your criticism unequivocally but just for one thing: reverse engineering with a view to making the sources public is 100% illegal likewise. You may legally reverse engineer exclusively to educate your own self. Educating others and/or making your means for reverse engineering a ...

Re: Release testing for 0.3.16

@Reactionist: I would be careful about the wording of "ReactOS is a GNU GPL attempt to reinvent their own Windows XP replica from the sources of NT kernel in their possession." in your review. That sounds like ReactOS has Windows NT kernel source code in their possession, which would be il...

Re: Release testing for 0.3.16

The explorer_new shell has actually been bundled for quite some time in the nightly builds but we never really advertised that. Well now we are. It is not yet enabled by default, so running it will require killing the old explorer and starting explorer_new. Feedback on how it feels will help determ...
