On the other hand they would probably need less money and be better able to attract outside interest.

The community edition didn't make it, but there still seems to be plenty of interest. Maybe things would work better if it had a smaller goal like make Steam work, or make CCCP work, but only have one going on at one time that can be donated to (unlike the community funded ideas that didn't work out).
