Re: Open source DirectX?

Yes, a native DirectX would be nice, but we run into the problem like in the mouse fable. A bunch of mice were tired of running from the cat. They formed a committee to figure out what could be done. Someone finally suggested that one of the mice should hang a bell on the cat's collar. Then the lead...

Re: Switching the target to the NT 6.x kernel might save R&D time in the long run

"Expect" does NOT imply that you are giving orders! I can say "I expect Windows 12 to suck even worse than Windows 10" but that doesn't mean that I want Microsoft to make it happen. Thank you. I think many of us would expect Windows 14 or whatever their next thing after that wil...

Yeah, but that uses OpenGL to emulate it, even though that is likely slow. Plus the memory models are different, but they do their best to fake it. We could use a true DirectX built from scratch and not dependant on other graphics libraries.

Re: USB initial plug and play support wine

A group of people expecting something is not an order. You can expect all day, but that doesn't have to affect who is being expected from at all. A whole lot of people have been expecting ROS to be ready for a long time. So it is just an ideal. One's own expectation is an internal thing that does no...

Re: Switching the target to the NT 6.x kernel might save R&D time in the long run

I took the "should" as a hypothetical ideal. I didn't see anyone attempting to order others around. Just because things should be a certain way, it doesn't mean they are, but it is nice to dream. Of course, it is best to apply the "should" to oneself. If you want to see a compone...

Re: Switching the target to the NT 6.x kernel might save R&D time in the long run

If we want to get technical, what he said is true already.... in many ways, it is mostly complete. But the last 10-20 percent takes the longest. So it might be just "mostly complete" for years to come.

Re: Programs that heavily rely on NT 6.x APIs list

However, ROS is gong beyond just misreporting the version. They already are using some NT 6 APIs due to Wine. They didn't want to keep having to rewrite a number of parts in Wine, so better to just give it what it needs. So some NT 6 API support is already here. The devs said in other places that th...

Re: Programs that heavily rely on NT 6.x APIs list

Actually, instead of a "shim," it would be a real Vista/7+ API. Since programs can be confused by the presence of newer APIs than reported, ROS will simply supply the missing APIs on demand. The files involved might be given different names and then proxied to use whatever API set requeste...

Re: Programs that heavily rely on NT 6.x APIs list

There seems to be a misunderstanding here and a misuse of "shims." The idea is to have actual API sets that will work with the newer programs. A shim almost implies adding stubs or tweaking parameters to fool the program into running. So instead of adding fake APIs to trick anything, real ...

Re: I have had enough

And in the common abbreviation (OM_) the G on the end can mean "Goodness," not the name of any deity. So why not give the benefit of the doubt and not automatically assume they are using God's name in vain? And when I was a teen, I nearly got in trouble with my parents for using "G*ll...

Yes, of course, if you want kill the project. The US laws are worst than EU. Yes and no. You wouldn't likely kill it, and the project tries to stay US compliant. The copyright laws are tougher here to an extent, but the project doesn't violate them. I think there was once a US branch of ReactOS. Bu...

Re: Should I make a Pinball game for ReactOS?

I don't see what would be wrong with including ROS artwork in a game, though I don't know what the foundation would think due to trademark issues, at the least, include a disclaimer statement about who owns the trademark... ("ReactOS and the ReactOS 'planet' logo are registered trademarks of th...
