NT 6.x Features?

Post by ReactOS_FAN »

Hallo Guys,

anyone has news if ReactOS will have NT 6.x Features?

Like:
ASLR
DEP
UAC

And I suggest to implement Kernel-Based Virtualization like under Linux :)

Hi ! Our principal target is Windows Server 2003. So not those features (certainly not UAC, but one can hope ALPC...). Concerning virtualization, try to talk with Aleksey, he has some projects in mind concerning that (send him a mail, go to the IRC channel #reactos, ...)

Shouldn't be the Target Windows 7 or Vista?

ASLR and UAC are good security features.

Considering NT6 is built on NT5, until we have a stable NT5, trying to go for NT6 just makes things more difficult.

I just hope ReactOS will be stable until 2020 :)

I don't want to use Metro/Ugly UI from MS.

by then u will find NT 5 is in dumpster for developers
most application and games will not work on NT 5 based OS
ROS project is running slow
i fear when the project is ready to be launched as a stable OS i find myself having an OS but no programs to run on it
ironic isnt it

But maybe by then, developers would want to write for us? We could keep a large market share. Plus, lots of old software will still be around. Software doesn't go bad. What happens is the paradigm collapses around it. Or the closed source model does it poor justice.

by 2020 the support on OS based on NT 5 will be totally dead
so all new apps and games will not work
and it will be harder to find software drivers for the hardware manufactured at that time
will be trying to install win9x on a modern computer as a primary OS

Might be depending how many users had MS Windows x86 installeds, even running in a PC x64 hardware.

It seems that NT5 is already no longer supported, and NT5.1 only has another year left. I didn't realize that before. :(
NT6.1 has until 2020.

Interesting to see how the support window shrinks (and sad, with Win7 seems to me that there's less maintenance work in long run than was on XP with its 3 Service Packs).

Could be related to the fact that the time until a new OS version came out was much larger for XP (with its successor Vista) than for 7 (with its successor 8).

Let's leave UAC out of this.

I think UAC is a nice feature to avoid software messing with the OS under the hood, while being able to install software without explictly loging in with an admin account (i.e., if you don't select "run as admin" something that should be ran as admin, prompts to). I wouldn't go farther than that, but at least Windows 8 doesn't seem to do much more.
