Windows 10 signature program now denies other OSs

Post by erkinalp »

Microsoft has recently added a requirement to make unable to uninstall Windows or install any non-Windows OS, including ReactOS, to pass Windows signature and genuine sticker tests. https://m.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/5 ... ogram_now/
We must be quick or ReactOS may quickly become impossible to run on modern post-IBM PCs.

Reddit posts ought to be labeled "Don't Panic" in friendly red letters.

Most of what I saw on that Reddit thread appears to be rumors and exaggerated (or false!) conspiracy theories.
Keep calm and carry on as Lenovo works to rectify their product's behavior:

That does not change Microsoft's monopolistic stance, still.

Seems rather that Lenovo simply just screwed up. There's one person in the Reddit thread reporting that the Signature Edition laptop runs Linux just fine. See replies from Ashtefere, colemickens and 0xFFFFFF for further myth debunking.

And just because one person reports it isn't so doesn't mean everyone should back down. Shills love to drop in and spread mis-information in discussions like that. Clearly much more information is needed either way.

BUT Microsoft would gladly lock out other OSes, and they DO still push in that direction, even if they have not gotten there yet. If users of non-Microsoft OSes (or eventually even just software in general), don't push back when something "accidentally" breaks, then Microsoft will get their way much sooner.

IBM won a lawsuit against Microsoft for doing that by making computer companies only install Windows and not OS/2 Warp.

Well, if that's the grand scheme MS is aiming for then they're doing a piss poor job at it. So, I'm inclined to believe a different story. Those Windows Signature desktops and laptops have been put on the market in response to the demand for systems with a preinstalled Windows OS without the usual bloated crapware that has been giving those systems a bad name for so long. One of the requirements is that the UEFI has to be locked or at least set (jury still out on that) to the most performant configuration, probably combined with the newest power saving features for laptops as well. WRT to mass storage, this means setting the firmware to NVMe Raid mode instead of "good ole' AHCI". Since both Intel and Lenovo haven't made Linux drivers available for this particular storage setting in UEFI, Linux simply won't install. Windows, "of course", will, but as for now, only by means of a custom build driver that hasn't been mainlined yet in the vanilla Windows installation media ISOs. Slip the NVMe RAID drivers into the Linux kernel, and Linux runs will run just as fine as well. This ball is in Intel's and/or Lenovo's park, for 11 months already IIRC.

Ironically enough, it's easier to install Linux on a Surface  .

I'm really sick of hearing these false rumors every single year. To all the schizophrenics who fall for this time after time, please just switch to TempleOS and leave us all alone.

I guess that all games creators also want to kill non-Windows OSes since they support DirectX11/12 only, same kind of argument :ugeek: Fortunately Vulkan seems to become a good way for both Windows and Linux.

EDIT: Vulcan->Vulkan

It is called Vulkan. Anyway, Steam and EA/Origin now provide an incentive to port to non-Windows OSs.

That is just cruel... imagine having to use templeOS day in and day out. It would make the good North Korean standard s/w list (with a few changes).

Well, if someone would give it a decent GUI and add network support, it might be worthwhile. But, it is against their basic premises, as 640x480 and no network support are non-negotiable. I guess they associate the Internet with the Devil. Yes, I've heard that objection in the 90's.

Maybe we should have a new thread as to which templeOS features should make it into ReactOS...

I like its interactive shell (hyperlinks plus C-like language at the command prompt), plus its hypertext-like help.
