HW Test: DELL Inspiron 1520

Post by cyberjaq »

hi all,
new here and just wanted to post my experience so far.
Using an old DELL laptop CORE2DUO T5450 @ 1.66GHz, 2Gb RAM, 250Gb HD
Initially used livecd and managed to get ReactOS working so downloaded boot CD.
Installation was clean and easy and now have Build 20161114-r73228 running.
Standard VGA driver works at 1280x800 (and lower resolutions)
No sound but keyboard and trackpad working fine.
Successfully installed following drivers from Dell website:
R149798 Broadcomm 440x 10/100 integrated controller v4.6
R153997 Intel mobile chipset driver A02 8.2.0.1014
Problem to install:
R181739 Intel GM965 Graphics Driver
R141246 Ricoh R5C832 (SD card)

Following software now running:
Adobe Acrobat 5.0
Winrar 3.3
Firefox v3.0 (sometimes does not fully close so must delete process in task manager)

Can now access internet although graphics slow. Have ping'd other PC's on network but no access to them

Will try to post more updates when played around a bit more.

Update: 22MAY2017
Tried to Install 0.4.5 on DELL (as below) but failed (CDROM problems or corrupt file maybe)
Downloaded nightly build and installed fine. 20170521-r74612
Initial problem to install R149798 Broadcomm 440x 10/100 integrated controller v4.6. However, realised network already working as installation had picked it up automatically :)
Wine Gecko failed to install on 1st time.
Installed Firefox v28 so on internet :)
Tried to install my official copy of Microsoft Office Home and Business but failed with "The exception unknown software exception ( 0x80000003 ) occurred under application at location 0x7c92cf3a.
Checked other posts and realised needed gecko and samba installed. After installing re-tried office but failed as said problem with installation software !

Still no sound as Sigmatel Audio driver hangs as says another installation already running.
Ricoh chip card reader driver R141246 caused BSOD.
Intel mobile chipset installs ok R153997

Networking: can ping the DELL laptop from PC on the network but no way to access the network from the laptop or visa versa ??

A similar or the same bug as just been reported this morning, see CORE-13303. See also CORE-13304, which, according to the report, is related.
Please keep the Windows classic 9x/2000 look and feel.

ReactOS does not include a driver for a Broadcomm network controller. You will have to install it yourself.

you are correct.
Previously i have been able to install the Broadcom driver manually and gain access to the internet.
With this new build it no longer installs.

Try revision 75551, it may or may not help you install your network driver.
Thomas Faber committed changeset 75551 to the ReactOS Main Repository project

update 22Apr2020
have previously tried 4.11 and 4.11 on the old Inspiron but both failed to install, not sure what the regression was.
However, have now successfully installed 4.13. :)
The great news is that a Logitech USB mouse can now be used and best of all it reads/write to memory sticks - a great progress !!
Broadcom drivers successfully connect to the internet but still no sound with the SigmaTel drivers (but they do progress further than before)
Intel chipset drivers load. Am still only running on standard VGA graphics and redraw of windows is a bit slow (could be machine spec though)

even managed to install Office 2010 - although not that usable

will keep testing and update again soon - but very happy to get this far
