Re: [GSoC 2017] Missing introducing of the students
They only had 4 students in 2016 GSOC, too. It is easier for Haiku because they aren't trying to replicate a proprietary OS, where very few people have knowledge of.

What about BeOS?ROCKNROLLKID wrote:...they aren't trying to replicate a proprietary OS, where very few people have knowledge of.

It sort of started that way, as they were trying to recreate BeOS. But since that is defunct , they can add to the standards without causing compatibility problems.ROCKNROLLKID wrote:They only had 4 students in 2016 GSOC, too. I was sort of wishing there was more emphasis in platform drivers for ROS. I am glad Trevor might have a chance to finish the NTFS write support. The USB3 support is handy, though most XP/2003 machines had 3rd party drivers. Of course, since newer machines don't target XP/2003, it would be good to have generic USB3 support. As for the other stuff, it would be nice. However, those other things are not mission critical. We already have RAPPS, and Windows has nothing like it, and most Windows users are used to searching for software and installing what they like. But it would be nice if all the common and popular things were available in a single location. Then as far as shell extensions, I see the USB eject as the most important. I've never used any quick launch toolbar, and most laptops have their own power displays.
Too bad we didn't get anyone to work on audio drivers, continued mixer work, or even new test suites and kernel tools. However, I'm grateful for whoever they send and whatever they will do. And even things that seem minor can and do highlight larger problems.

i think USB 3 makes perfect sense as a project because both new AMD and Intel hardware they don't make xp drivers anymore. Even windows 7 is off limits for drivers so in my mind this is a crucial project for the future especially as ReactOS moves from alpha to beta and more people start actively using it.
