Cygwin + ReactOS LiveCD

Post by anonq »

Cygwin is a linux-like library and environment for MS Windows.

Using Cygwin, it is easier to port various Linux applications to Windows.

Is it possible to use Cygwin with present version of ReactOS?

If ReactOS project is completed/Beta version, is it possible to create a Cygwin and ReactOS LiveCD?

Thank you.

Cygwin is supposed to work, there is even a ROS-modified version, so it should be possible, read this:

Uhm, this is about running Cygwin GDB on Windows, connecting to the "gdb stub" in the ReactOS kernel. AFAIK, there are still problems with Cygwin on ReactOS.

What's the main problem?

I've never worked on getting Cygwin running, but I think I heard something about the Cygwin fork() implementation and Copy-On-Write.

Cygwin is a big hack. Mainly develped to get Linux/Unix programs running on Win9X. Posix layer with Cygwin compad would be better.

Reason Posix layer can get the thread timing better than Cygwin as well as alot of other things better for speed less double handling.

Mingws Gdb works kinda.

WinNT already had a posix layer when Cygwin was formed. Ie it targets older version of windows not current.

Lets look at getting some performace out of it. Not a snail.

Windows' POSIX Subsystem is *heavily* outdated, it only supports parts POSIX 1.0. Also, it's not being actively developed and as far as i know, Windows XP doesn't include it anymore (i'm not sure about the latter though)

You can download Windows Services for UNIX (SFU) 3.5 from MS:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsservers ... fault.mspx

That's the latest posix subsystem for WinXP.

Reactos has a start of a Posix subsystem.

Subsystems are faster than what Cygwin could ever be.

Posix in windows is heavy out dated. But having Cygwin pass what ever has not changed down to the subsystem is about 40 percent faster.

Now updating Ros Posix system is the best option.
