Default encoding in ReactOS

Post by shunesburg »

What encoding ReactOS use it by default ?
For information, in Windows, it's in function of your language, and on Linux and MacOS (and Windows 10 if I don't made mistake), it's UTF8.

ReactOS aims to behave like Windows Server 2003, so the same concept of code pages applies as in Windows, and each language should use the same code page as it does in Windows.
The only change regarding this in a recent Windows 10 build is that it's now possible to set UTF-8 as the system locale. This can break expectations in existing software though, which is why it's marked as experimental.
Internally, Windows (and ReactOS) uses UTF-16/UCS-2 almost everywhere.

Thank you for the answer.
Is it possible to change the encoding for a software?
In the compatibility menu, there is no this kind of option.
Ex: To run Chinese or Japanese apps, you have square characters.

I would guess that's simply a bug in ROS. Or does it happen on Windows-with-a-western-encoding too?

The problem is when we use a Asian software in an ReactOS (or Wine) with an encoding from Occidental encoding.
In Windows XP, there is an option "Install East Asian languages", but in ReactOS, it's greyed.
Maybe it's not implemented?
