If they do sell to the public, could one install ReactOS? It would be more appealing than Linux since more programs would work with ROS.

only if it hasn't an "integrated" (unified memory) graphic card (i had a desktop pc with one of these and no agp slots!!! even windows solitaire had problems. i hated it!!!)

I won't buy it, so I don't care.

More programs? Some how I think not.

Lot of the linux problem is too many programs to do the same job.

I think that the main problem is ROS requirements.

I would go with Haiku istead.

About what requirements do you write?

ReactOS minimum footprint is about 4 MB RAM (memory) (if you build it the right way).

The OLPC notebook use a low cost AMD Genode CPU which is still a normal x86 CPU with ~300 MHz. As ReactOS works fine with all 486+ CPUs you could run ReactOS e.g. on a 33 MHz CPU too as you can with WinXP.

To use ReactOS on a OLPC notebook you may need driver(s) for unusual devices and a modified/improved FreeLoader as no standard BIOS is available, afaik.

assuming it would all work, i might but not now, later when reactos is a bit more useful/stable. currently I wouldn't buy hardware specifically for reactos. I might buy one, install an old copy of win98 and upgrade to reactos at a later date.

so i would prefer buying an old p3/athlon laptop, since it will cost a little more than OLPC and it would be closer to my needs.

however, i think olpc laptop could be very handy if someone has no worries about integrated video

I don't have a need for an OLPC laptop, but the whole "customers to have to buy two laptops at once - with the second going to the developing world" policy is pretty neat. If I had a child that I wanted to introduce to computers, I would consider buying, and dual booting with ROS. I suppose my preferences aside, it would be good to expose my children to all types of interfaces so they are more well rounded when it comes to computing.

Well, I think OLPC is a really nice thing, but for my needs I think an OQO is more realistic ( http://www.oqo.com ). But if we had ROS installed by defaul I would definately buy one, not for use but for testing.

OLPC with ReactOS would be a sweet idea! However... has anyone ever heard of the Eduwise by Intel? It is supposed to be more powerful. Who knows? The Eduwise might suit ReactOS better!

id rather spend the extra money and buy a Eee portable, the OLPC is too limited in its design and specs.

like the eee the price went up to $399

if your talking about the olpc then you are missunderstanding, the deal is you have to buy 2 olpc,s , you get one and one goes to a poor kid, so really the price is 198.00 per pc.
