ReactOS Exploder?

Post by Sand »

Why not to name ROS file manager "ROS Exploder" instead of "ROS Explorer"?

I think it would be in line with "reacty" image of ReactOS! 8)

Wut?

Create a fork and modify the name, the source code is free.

Why not to change the name here? I think it's excellent idea.

The filename would need to remain the same...

Explorer should stay explorer, as people know what it means. Exploder has a totally different meaning, so it's just doing something for some bad reason. If it's a decompression program, than it's a great name. But explorer is for exploring... that's why it has that name!

Please don't start to give ReactOS programs trollish names.

Some windows software depends on the name 'explorer', so doing this would cause some major compatibility issues, I'd imagine.

Can you give an example please? Does it mean that Windows file manager cannot be replaced by another programm such as Total Commander for example?

(note also that the problem with file names can be solved with a hardlink...)

Well, on Windows, I know the biggest problem replacing explored altogether is it's unification of a recycle bin and what not, so in actual Windows, no :)

Recycle bin and that stuff is provided by the shell, not by Explorer. As long as the replacement is a shell browser and not a file browser (i.e. it communicates with the shell and not with the filesystem), Explorer can be replaced without losing the recycler.

This still doesn't change the fact that if the name were changed it would contravene the 'ultimate goal of ReactOS':
To allow you to remove Windows® and install ReactOS without the end user noticing the change.
Not to mention the fact that it's called Explorer for a perfectly good, funtional reason.

However I think it would make a good easter egg, maybe a registry key change could cause all the explorer windows to have the title of 'exploder' instead :p
