bootloader dual boot question

Post by mtm1964 »

Hi,

I have an old (with all new hardware) Lenovo 3000 laptop in which is currently running Ubuntu 1610. I made a separate partition to install a nightly build of React as a dual boot. Everything seemed to go fine until it gave me an option for a bootloader. Obviously, I chose the wrong one otherwise I wouldn't be here. I chose to skip until I got more information.

I want to keep Ubuntu as the default boot with react being the choice I scroll down to. So can you tell me which option I should have chosen? Thank you.

Read the installation instructions. Avoid using ReactOS in the manner you have chosen.

Install and run it in a virtual machine.

ReactOS does not have a problem with non-MS OEM IDs unlike Windows. Dual boot is safe as long as it is in its separate partition.
-uses Ubuntu+GNOME 3 GNU/Linux
-likes Free (as in freedom) and Open Source Detergents
-favors open source of Windows 10 under GPL2

Warning: Please bear in mind that ReactOS is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not stable or feature-complete and is not recommended for everyday use. Operating system bugs can and do result in corrupted file systems, overwritten partitions, and more. Do not install ReactOS on any computer containing important data without using a virtual machine or making full backups first.

Is it safe on a separate partition even if it's the same physical drive? I've been swapping HDD's on my real hardware at home (no real success to report yet), but I've been avoiding using the same drive because I'm afraid a hiccup will nuke my PC.

dizt3mp3r had good advice. One should not even think of using the word "safe". A well-behaved OS probably will not damage another OS's partition. Do not trust alpha stage ReactOS to be well-behaved.
