Well, did you read about the current status of ReactOS? You know about the Alpha quality status I guess? Drivers are not many included by default, you need to use Windows XP/2003 ones and with some luck they even work. USB is a known problem and you can try our new USB stack for that: http://vgal.ru.com/reactos-0-4-7-2-new-usb/
ReactOS is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is recommended only for evaluation and testing purposes.

ReactOS 0.4.7.2 + new USB is actually assembled from several branches of my fork. Thomas has one big common patch for 0.4.7.2+.

I'm sure some newer people would get confused about "0.4.7.2", because news claim only 0.4.7 release.
My working rigs:
Dell Latitude E5430 on 0.4.9-vgal - i5-3340M, USB boot.
Partially working rigs:
Ryzen 7 3700X on B450 board - 0.4.14 boot via preinstall. USB broken.

Because its not official built and means based on 0.4.7 Version 2 of the USB updates
ReactOS is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is recommended only for evaluation and testing purposes.

hi the USB keyboard/mouse works like a charm.
Installing the ISO from an USB stick also works, but the bootup fails: "Opening hive fails"
Computer: Dell Optiplex 755.

If you are talking about "ReactOS + new USB", then after the first text stage you need to edit the new "freeldr.ini" on your hard disk. It is necessary to reduce by one the number of the disk in all the lines. For example, "rdisk (1)" to "rdisk (0)". This is due to the fact that during installation, the USB boot drive is seen by the system as the first disk (numbering starts from 0), and the hard disk is the second one.
By the way try to disconnect and then reconnect (maybe several times, making small pauses between) the mouse and / or the keyboard.

Manually editing the freeldr.ini after USB-installation worked easily.
Thanks.

I tried connecting a mouse, this worked fine several times.
Unplugging the mouse is a different story, each time the system got stuck.
