with the new 2.6 i install but i cant get rid of grub! how do i?

You can install a default MBR using:

FDISK /mbr

A FDISK.EXE is available from the FreeDOS project. Just create a boot disk with FDISK.EXE and after booting, start the program as shown above. After that, GRUB is gone.

You really should make a backup before updating the MBR because the MBR sector on the HDD also contains the partition table.
