Boot to "DOS"

Post by mrmajik45 » Mon Mar 05, 2018 6:39 pm

Sense ReactOS was supposed to be a windows 95 clone / probably still is. Shouldn't ReactOS have a "Boot to DOS" option in it's shutdown menu like Windows 95? You kind of did that before the Explorer was implemented.

Since when?

NT is NOT Windows 95!

And if you are a real tester, then you should know!
Please keep the Windows classic (9x/2000) look and feel.
The layman's guides to - debugging - bug reporting - compiling - with some complementary scripts.
They may help you with a problem, so do have a look at them.

Development began in 1996, as a Windows 95 clone project, and was continued as ReactOS in 1998

You quote the page, yet fail to read the head of it;
ReactOS is a free and open-source operating system for x86/x64 personal computers intended to be binary-compatible with computer programs and device drivers made for Windows Server 2003.
The objective has changed long ago to XP/2003, if you'd look at source code, you'd see it uses NT kernel, rather than being DOS-based like win95.
My working rigs:
Dell Latitude E5430 on 0.4.9-vgal - i5-3340M, 8GB (4 utilized) DDR3-1600MHz RAM, booting off a USB.

Funfact: FreeWin95 phase did not even have ANY code at all. ReactOS phase was the first one writing code.

ReactOS is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is recommended only for evaluation and testing purposes.

Out of curiosity, what would you do with a "Boot to DOS" option? There is the command terminal (cmd.exe) after all...

A 'Boot to DOS' option could be created in the menu which appears when we hammer F5 or F8. ( During boot process )
EmuandCo said there is a CLI only mode for NT.( Even ReactOS has one )
A similar mode which would take the user to a CLI only mode ( where commands and programs would run on ReactOS VDM ) could be created.
( This will be very safe and much safer than FREEDOS. This is just a Theory and requires a lot of work. That's what I think )
It sounds adventerous.
Fun and ....

I still don't know how to get to the CLI only mode which already exists on ReactOS.( This is not VDM. This is just ReactOS without GUI )

mrmajik45 : I like the concept.

Note : I am not a programmer. I can't do this. So, don't insult me by saying 'Sure. Do it yourself'.

There is no CLI-only mode. My question is what would such a thing be used for? Let's talk about that before we talk about how it could be integrated.

milon : See This.
Maybe I did not correctly understand what EmuandCo said then.

Mental Retro Syndrome (MRS).
It happens.
Only treatment is 'Virtual Retro Reality'.
Additional Information : MRS was discovered by Sometotle somewhere between 0 BC to 0 AD.
S/He even found a temporary medicine but could not implement it.
S/He said MRS can not be fully cured.
S/He her/himself was affected by it.
MRS is also known as Mental Retro Drive(MRD) and Mental Retro Order(MRO).

Virtual Disease Manager (VDM) and Virtual Disease Monitor (VDM) could be used to treat a MRS patient and track health condition respectively.
Hence there is this F(L)OSS medicine named ReactOS VDM which can do both.

Therefore, we need a quicker way to get to the VDM.
So we might need 'Boot to DOS' option in the boot menu.
After all ReactOS VDM is a memory preserving medicine.

Two ways... You stop posting b*shit or I make you stop. Which do you prefer?

Are we really discussing about adding DOS as boot option instead of pushing ROS forward?! A few weeks too early for April fool's.

Boot to "DOS" undoubtedly doesn't make sense as, others have said, ReactOS bases through the design principles of NT architecture and not DOS (like Windows 95, 98, 98 SE, ME) in any way. Thus your suggestion is out of the question.
