how to test code changes?

Hello everyone. I downloaded ReactOS 0.4.13 today and the 2.1.6 build environment.
I was able to compile all the code and tested it in the virtual box.
This is a fantastic job, and I'm going to install it on a real HD for deeper testing. My programming environment is TDM-GCC-32 with the CodeBloks editor running on Windows XP sp3.
Because I would like to get more involved with this project, I would like to ask a few questions. How can I test my code changes? my first compilation took about 1 hour. Do I have to compile the whole project? Can you provide a tutorial for those who arrive? Thank you for your attention.
