New starfield screensaver for ReactOS

Post by Carlo Bramix »

Hello friends,
here in bugzilla:

http://www.reactos.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=6270

I'm providing a new starfield screensaver for ReactOS written with OpenGL.
Test it freely and report your impressions/suggestions if you want.

Sincerely,

Carlo Bramini.

Hi!!
I have just tested it on 7-64 bits.It works well..but it seems to be "slow" not smooth. Can anyone test it?

Nice screensaver :) Tested Win7 64 - 64 FPS on ATI Radeon HD 4770 @ 775 x 850 MHz.

It could be possible that your OpenGL driver may have some troubles to work well with 2D and it preferes that textures are created as mipmaps.
I posted a new fixed binary with its sources at bugzilla, try it if you can.
Theorically, this fix should not affect the application if it already worked with previous code.

Sincerely,

Carlo Bramini.

Tried on Win7 x64 and it works smoothly, just one note: as Gabriel said on the italian forums, if running with a wide screen resolution it results with 2 lateral strips in black/white with reduced frame rate while, I repeat, the center is smooth and perfect (with a HD6970 my hope was to run it without problems :D )

New version uploaded at bugzilla.
It fixes the two lateral bands in wide screen resolution and it adds polish translation.

hCosmos is used in configuration dialog.

It is still slow for me(even the new binary), maybe it is related to the Intel HD graphics the Laptop has.^^
But it is quite slow here.Should be working ok in an Intel HD?Or does it really need a good graphic card?
Tested under Windows 7/64bits

Intel HD is not a dedicated GPU and has crappy 3d performance. Works fine here on ATI HD4650

Actually I was able to reproduce the slowdown on an old system based on a Intel945GZ chipset and the slowdown disappeared by creating the texture as a mipmap rather than a plain 2D object.
What I can do now is to add an hidden registry key (that I can eventually remove in final version with an #ifdef...#endif) to disable texture mapping.
So you could tell me if slowdown is caused by that...
Did you find that reducing the number of stars (and so the number of textures) improves the performances?

Yes, I forgot that detail...
I don't know if things changed with time, but if you are using Intel HD series 2000 or 3000, in other words the stuff integrated with Atom CPUs, then the driver does not provide accelerated OpenGL graphics to you.

I changed to 20 stars, and still nothing. This graphic card must be a full shit :)It looks quite nice in the small preview window.

I am going to raise the concern here that having a screensaver that needs to use the GPU in order to do anything meaningful when the machine is supposed to be idling (and preparing to go to sleep for that matter) seems a bit counterintuitive.

No idea what OpenGL version does that screensaver use, but i presume it would work nicer even on 3dfx Voodoo 2 with its opengl miniport driver than on INTEL IGP 3d decelerator.
