Github - ReactOS

Post by mrmajik45 »

How effective was adding ReactOS to Github? I've seen the amount of pulls and commits on the 0.4.8 News. So I'm expecting it to be have been really effective.

I guess the question is how are you measuring "effective"?

If I would have to choose between (Twice) or (2x) then it would be (2x)

Measurements are expressed as a number and the units the number represents.

Mrmajik45, you should be able to figure out for yourself the average commits per month in the year before the ReactOS project switched from Subversion (SVN) to Git and the corresponding figure after the project changed to Git.

SVN times was not so bad, people all developed ReactOS. 0.4 was also done in that times. However, contributing was hard and a little confusing, regular contributors (not developers) were too few. All you could do was sending a patch in JIRA, which STILL contains lots of forgotten patches...

Also, code managing with SVN was harder, IIRC, especially there was some problems with merging. But I liked (and still miss) revision numbers and ViewVC interface :( With the rise of GitHub and brains gathering there, after long years, we came in and patches started to flow. Easy pull requests. Lots of minor stuff first, then coming developers.

GitHub is not the only reason for our recent speedup. Don't forget our success which opened regular GSoC, Hackfest'15, 3-months release (0.4 released after 15 months!!!), new shell and stabilized kernel, ReactOS Community on YouTube and so on...

You've already spammed other threads on forum and even created a ticket on JIRA.

Stop this, you're really annoying!

I was able to figure out SVN (Subversion). I submitted a patch. Git is still a mystery to me.
